The water in the pool must be purified both chemically and physically. The physical part refers to the work performed by the circulation system, and the chemical part refers to the elements and substance that we must add to the water to purify it. Chemically speaking your pool requires two basic elements to purify: disinfectant and PH control.
The disinfectant is the substance that allows us to kill bacteria, protozoa and viruses in water to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Examples are chlorine, active oxygen (pure oxygenated water), biguanides (Baquacil), etc.
Chlorine is the chemical mostly used to disinfect swimming pools in Weston, but although its use is so common, many pool owners in Brodward County are unaware of certain myths that will be discussed below.
- Chlorine smell means clean pool
False. In usual doses chlorine in a pool is imperceptible. That smell that we often attribute to a clean pool is actually due to chloramines, which are one of the residues produced by chlorine in water when combined with urine, sweat, leftovers of personal hygiene products such as creams, shampoos, lotions and conditioners. In a nutshell that smell of chlorine in the pool is means that the pool is dirty.
- Chlorine is the cause of red eyes, dry skin, green hair and enlarging allergic problems
Flase. If that were true, we would have the same discomfort when showering at home, since the water in the pipe is also treated with chlorine. The real villains that cause all these problems are chloramines which are potentially harmful, volatile organic compounds..
- Chlorine multi-effects is better than chlorine without “effects”.
False. A pool needs primarily the disinfecting agent (chlorine). Flocculants, algicides, and other “additional” products should never be used at their discretion. Each pool has its moment for it. It is best to use it when necessary and not compulsory.
- The use of chlorine does not affect the pH of the pool water.
False. Chlorine always affects the pH in one way or another. Generally with “normal” doses and depending on the chlorinated compound used, it affects in different degrees. By generating all chlorinated compounds tend to lower the pH, with the exception of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and calcium hypochlorite (food chlorine) which raise the pH.
- Dichloro is better than trichlor, or trichlor is better than liquid chlorine, “or any other comparison between chlorines.
Flase. Chlorine is the same in any case. Saline chlorinators (salt electrolysis) are based on the same chlorine manuf
acturing principle used in the industry, with the difference of doing it on a small scale in a swimming pool.
The chlorine manufacturing capacity is similar to that which can be obtained by using trichloride pellets. The advantage lies mainly in that chlorine is produced while the pump is running, and that the chlorine produced is unstable (with which we can control the level of cyanuric acid very well). For everything else, the saline electrolysis chlorination system does not differ in terms of maintenance in relation to other chlorination methods (they require shock treatments, chloramines control, over-demand, etc.). In other words, a chlorination system using salt electrolysis continues to require the addition of chlorine via the “manual” route, although reduced.
- Chlorine from salt chlorinators is better than chlorine tablets or other means
